Green Living
At Crackpot Cottage we spend much of our time finding ways to be as self sufficient as possible, whilst keeping mother nature happy.
And so we build and dig and plant and harvest, and return what we don't need for ourselves back to the land (or give it to the hens!).
We have plenty to keep us busy, rain or shine (mostly rain!), whatever the season such as:
vegetable garden
fruit trees
hens
lots of flower beds and lawns
plenty of hedges and natural fencing
composting
and the list goes on.......
Here we share with you our triumphs and failures, and all the hard work and attention our land needs.
Reviews
This beautiful historical property is nestled away in the hillside of some of the most picturesque countryside. The room is simply perfect with a comfy bed and views out over the rolling green hills. The first night we arrived we ordered Emanuela’s handmade pizza and ate it out on the raised garden which was set up with table and chairs for us. This was a total delight. The food (and glass of wine that came with it) was restaurant quality and the experience / views for our al fresco dining felt akin to being on a Tuscan hillside - not surprising with one of our hosts being Italian! Breakfast was perfect and full of thoughtful touches that really elevated it from other bnb’s (homemade bread, eggs from their chickens and homemade condiments). Emanuela recommenced a local walk and we’re so pleased we took her advice and saved the hill walk we’d planned for another time as it was one of the prettiest walks we’ve done, getting to follow the water, into the woods and across fields, visiting waterfalls on the way and a couple of great local pubs! We’d definitely return again and highly recommend this place. A couple who were staying there at the same time as us chose it as their honeymoon accommodation and we can really see why!
We stayed for one night in crackpot cottage and had a great time sitting by the fire and eating pizza. Was a great stop over on our travels up north. The views are amazing and it’s in such a fantastic area of the country. It rained for parts of our stay but this still didn’t bother us as we were just pleased to be outside in such a great setting. We also love outdoor eco living and Emmanuella and Karen have some great touches and systems in their garden! We also loved being off the grid for the evening! Great touches with the evening pizza and wine and morning breakfast!
The lodge is nestled away in an idillic location. The garden in which is situation is immaculately kept and the views and beautiful from the firepit. The food Emanuela makes is delicious we had a pizza and calzone and thoroughly enjoyed them. The meat platter is tasty too, the prosciutto is to die for. If you love the outdoors and a proper glamping experience (and a cold shower) this place is for you. Emanuela and Karen are wonderful hosts and very attentive, smiling and polite, they make you feel very welcome. They lent us a map for a walk that started a short drive away in Muker, which had stunning views along the valley which I'd highly recommend, which luckily we had the weather for. The stay was something very different for us, but nonetheless a memorable experience.
Lovely break in a stunning area - so pleased to have found this cottage as it served our needs so well - great to come back to after a long dales walk! Ice cream parlour at Brough Castle is highly recommended as are walks from Keld to Muker (and back) & the round walk from the Fat Lamb at Ravenstone dale. (The bridge Street Cottage - Brough)
