For the ones among you who love walking and come here for just a few days, the Muker Keld circular is a must!
Going through the meadows and then along the river, the walk is gentle and takes you through breath-taking views of the valley.
You will then start the climb towards Keld on uneven ground, through small woodlands and green pastures. The valley was once populated by about 1700 miners. You'll see many buildings from the mining works and cottages. One of them the beer house: a semi-detached cottage where homemade brew was served in the lounge.
It's worth stopping at the beer house and enjoying the view. On the other side of the river you'll see many of the remaining mining buildings and the spectacular Crackpot Hall, a farmhouse dating from the mid 18th century, which had been used as mine offices.
You will also see, just passed the beer house, what the locals believe is the most haunted cottage in Swaledale.
And then you finally arrive in Keld, taking a turn on the right just before the village to end up at the wonderful waterfalls in Keld, Kisdon Force.
From there you join the Pennine way to walk back to Muker. If you fancy another 20 minutes walk from Kisdon Force you go to the village and follow the signs for the camping site. Go through the campsite and after 5 minutes walk you will find the beautiful Catrake force. To go back to Muker you'll have to go back to Kisdon Force and join the Pennine way.
All in all about 6 miles of spectacular views!
